Hate crimes -criminal acts motivated by hatred based on race, religion, national origin, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, or disability- have been a focus of the Commission’s work for a number of years. Since 1980 we have published an annual Hate Crime Report of hate crime data; since 1984 we have sponsored the Network Against Hate Crime, a broad-based coalition of organizations that exchange information, conduct preventative and educational programs, and advocate for legislation that helps prevent hate crimes; and most recently we launched our Hate Crime Victim Assistance & Advocacy Initiative to assist victims of hate crimes. We have included here resources useful to us in these efforts to combat hate crime which we would like to share with others in LA who join us in this fight. Here you will find such resources as the Hate Crime Coordinator of your local police department; useful publications on hate crimes; and agencies that offer training and educations on hate crimes.
SUB CATEGORIES
Victim Assistance and Advocacy
Hate crime victim assistance and advocacy is an arena most recently added to the scope of the Commission’s work in addressing hate crimes. Listed here are community partners funded by the Commission’s Hate Crime Victim Assistance & Advocacy Initiative to provide assistance to victims of hate crimes and their families. Also listed are other organizations we know of that engage is this type of assistance and advocacy work. When a person is attacked for an inherent aspect of who they are, such as their race, ethnicity, gender or ability, as they are in a hate crime, it is not just the person attacked who is affected, but also their family as well as their whole community. The Commission is working with our community partners and many of the other organizations listed here to find ways to more comprehensively serve, not only the victim of a hate crime, but also their families and communities, in recovering from the trauma of being attacked based soley on an inherent aspect of one’s identity.

Addressing the Perpetrator
Addressing the perpetrators of hate crimes is unfortunately an area in which there remains a virtual dearth of resources, yet it is an area where resources are much needed. The Commission knows of only a handful of organizations that have attempted to this work, and usually only on a case by case basis. It is, however, a field we hope to help grow. Restorative justice efforts are sprouting in different parts of the county with varying degrees of success and the Commission is researching these efforts in hopes of working towards the replication of the most effective ones here in Los Angeles. Again, your leads and input of local work being done in this way is greatly appreciated: please communicate these to us through the “Contact Us” portion of the website.

Funding Anti Hate Crime Work
Here you will find limited resources for funding anti-hate crime work. Part of the work of the Commission and our partners is to raise visibility of hate crimes, and the impact they have on the community, and to educate on the importance of reporting of hate crimes so that more emphasis might be placed, and more funds alloted, for anti hate crime efforts. As with any of our resource categories, if you know of foundations or other funding sources that potentially fund anti-hate crime work, please forward to us using the “Contact Us” portion of this website so we might list them here.

Hate Crime Training
There are several sectors of the community who benefit from training in hate crimes. Educators benefit from learning how to better recognize and address hate crimes that occur on their campuses and in their classrooms, as well as of their legal responsibility to report hate crimes committed against their students as per Senate Bill 257. Law Enforcement benefit from learning the importance of codifying appropriate crimes as hate crimes as well as the ramifications of underreporting. Community based organizations that serve vulnerable communities benefit from learning how to more effectively advocate for and protect their constituents. Listed here are some of the organizations that we know of who provide training is this area.
